Police deploy additional units amid Ngcobo shutdown threat
Additional police resources have been deployed to Ngcobo following threats of an unlawful shutdown expected to begin at 05:00 on Tuesday, 11 August.
Eastern Cape police said they had taken note of an audio recording circulating on social media in which a person claiming to represent the Ngcobo Yethu Civic Organisation allegedly threatened to bring the town to a complete standstill.
According to police, the organisation has previously led marches in Ngcobo over municipal grievances.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata directed the immediate deployment of Public Order Policing units and visible policing task teams to the Ngcobo policing precinct.
Police said the additional deployment was intended to protect the public and maintain law and order. Normal policing operations and visibility would continue in other parts of the province.
While acknowledging the constitutional right to assemble and protest peacefully, police warned that demonstrations must remain within the law.
“The SAPS will not hesitate to effect the arrest and institute criminal proceedings against those who threaten public order or infringe upon the rights of others,” the statement said.
Police warned that individuals or groups engaging in criminal conduct would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Residents have been advised to remain calm but vigilant. Any information about unlawful activities can be reported to the nearest police station or anonymously through Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
