Queen’s and Selborne Set for Komani Derby Showdown

Queen’s College will welcome Selborne College to Komani for a packed derby programme involving rugby, hockey, chess, debating and squash from Thursday, 30 July, until Saturday, 1 August.

The two schools last met in East London on 15 and 16 May, when several closely contested matches were recorded across the age groups.

Selborne narrowly won the main rugby match 19–17, leaving Queen’s with an opportunity to reverse the result when the two First XV teams meet again at The Rec at 15:00 on Saturday.

Queen’s enjoyed victories in several of the previous rugby fixtures. The Second XV won 28–25, the Fourth XV claimed a 14–5 victory and the Sixth XV secured a convincing 28–0 win.

The Queen’s U16A team edged Selborne 28–26, while the U14A side recorded a 19–12 victory.

Selborne won the Third XV match 21–13, the Fifth XV encounter 24–19 and the Seventh XV fixture 38–28. The U16B match ended 12–10 in Selborne’s favour.

Several junior matches were also closely contested. Selborne defeated the Queen’s U15A side 12–10, while the U15B team went down 35–31. The U14B match ended 10–5, and Selborne edged the U14E team 38–34.

Selborne also won the U15C match 27–5, the U14C encounter 34–0 and the U14D fixture 28–10.

This week’s programme begins on Thursday when the hockey Third XI teams meet on the Queen’s College Astro at 15:00.

Most of the remaining hockey fixtures will take place on Friday. The U14A match starts at 12:30, followed by the U16C at 13:30, U16B at 14:30 and U16A at 15:30. The Second XI will play at 16:30 before the First XI takes the field at 17:45.

Chess, junior and senior debating, and squash fixtures are also scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Saturday’s rugby matches will be played at HQ Davies, TW Higgs West, Parry West and The Rec.

The U16A fixture at The Rec starts at 11:00, followed by the Third XV at 12:20 and the Second XV at 13:40.

The weekend will reach its main event at 15:00 when Queen’s and Selborne meet in the First XV showdown. Queen’s will be hoping home-ground advantage helps them overturn May’s narrow two-point defeat.
