Strong Winds Warning Issued for Komani and Parts of Chris Hani District

Residents in Komani and several parts of the Chris Hani District have been urged to prepare for strong and potentially damaging winds on Sunday, 28 June, after the South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for large parts of the Eastern Cape.

The warning is valid from 06:00 until 23:59 on Sunday and is linked to an approaching cold front expected to move across the province. According to the weather service, a tight pressure gradient ahead of the front is expected to create windy conditions across the interior, particularly over higher lying and mountainous areas. Wind gusts of between 70 and 85 km/h are possible in some places.

The warning area includes Komani and surrounding parts of the Chris Hani District, with areas around Cradock, Graaff-Reinet and the central interior also expected to experience strong winds.

Possible impacts include damage to informal and formal structures, disruptions to power and communication services, and difficulties for motorists, particularly high-sided vehicles travelling on exposed roads. The weather service has also warned of an increased risk of runaway veld fires due to the dry and windy conditions.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, exercise caution when travelling, and avoid lighting fires in open areas during the warning period.

Emergency services and motorists are advised to remain alert for rapidly changing conditions throughout the day.
