Snow Warning Issued for Molteno and Tarkastad Areas
Residents in parts of Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality are being urged to prepare for possible snowfall after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Level 2 Impact-Based Warning for disruptive snow on Thursday, 4 June.
The warning is valid from 00:00 until 23:59 on Thursday and includes the Molteno and Tarkastad areas, where light to moderate snowfall is expected over higher ground.
According to SAWS, a cut-off low pressure system together with a ridging high pressure system will bring deep moisture across the Eastern Cape from Wednesday to Friday. Freezing levels are expected to drop on Thursday, creating favourable conditions for snowfall in elevated areas.
Icy Roads Possible
Weather officials have warned that snowfall could lead to icy road conditions, particularly on mountain routes and higher-lying roads, potentially causing traffic disruptions.
The weather service also warned of possible impacts on vulnerable livestock and crops, while some rural streams could become difficult to access. Localised interruptions to services such as water, electricity, communications, schools and healthcare facilities are also possible.
Residents Advised to Take Precautions
SAWS has advised residents to dress warmly, avoid mountain passes where possible, and exercise caution when travelling. Motorists are encouraged to monitor road conditions and weather updates before setting out on long journeys.
While snowfall is expected mainly over higher-lying terrain, residents in the Molteno and Tarkastad areas are encouraged to remain alert as conditions may change rapidly.
