Nxuba (Cradock) businessman in court over R65,000 suspected stolen goods
A 38-year-old businessman from Nxuba is expected to appear before the Nxuba Magistrate’s Court on 28 April 2026, facing allegations of possession of stolen property following a police operation conducted earlier this month.
The arrest stems from an intelligence-driven, multi-disciplinary operation carried out on 24 April. According to a media statement issued by the Eastern Cape SAPS, the operation involved several specialised units, including Nxuba Crime Intelligence, the Dog Unit (K9), Crime Prevention Unit, Public Order Police, as well as K9 units from Middelburg and Graaff-Reinet.
Police allege that at approximately 09:30 on the day of the operation, officers acted on information suggesting that the suspect was in possession of suspected stolen property. The information pointed to items being kept both at the suspect’s residential premises and at a storage facility used for business purposes.
A search warrant was subsequently applied for and granted, allowing police to search both locations.
Items recovered during the operation
During the searches, police reported recovering a range of items believed to be stolen. These include:
- 1 x truck rim with a tyre
- 1 x Ryobi bench grinder
- 4 x pairs of truck spotlights
- 1 x petrol compressor
- 1 x truck tyre
- 2 x 20 litres of engine oil
- 8 x 5 litres of engine oil
- 6 x 5 litres of heavy-duty diesel engine oil
- 1 x 20 litres of antifreeze/coolant
- 2 x 20 litres of hydraulic oil
The total estimated value of the recovered items is approximately R65,000.
Following the recovery of these items, the suspect was arrested and is now expected to face charges related to the possession of suspected stolen property. Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing, and further developments may follow as the case progresses.
Police condemn alleged criminal conduct
Chris Hani District Commissioner, Major General Rudolph Adolph, criticised the alleged actions, warning against criminal activities linked to the accumulation of wealth through unlawful means. He highlighted the broader social impact of such conduct, particularly in communities where many residents are facing economic hardship.
Authorities say operations of this nature form part of ongoing efforts to combat crime through intelligence-led policing, with a focus on disrupting networks linked to stolen goods and illegal trade.
Court process to determine outcome
The matter is expected to be heard in court, where the allegations against the accused will be tested through the legal process. At this stage, the suspect has not been convicted of any offence and is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Police have encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities, noting that community information often plays a key role in such operations.
