Queenstown Harriers to Host Mountain Challenge Race in May
KOMANI – Runners and outdoor enthusiasts in Komani and surrounding areas are preparing for one of the region’s scenic trail events as the Queenstown Harriers host the Mountain Challenge later this year.
The race is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 16 May 2026, with participants set to gather at the Nederduitse Hervormde Kerk on Longhill Street. The event will start early in the morning at 7:00am, offering runners the chance to experience challenging terrain and mountain views around the Komani area.
Three Distance Options
According to event organisers, the Mountain Challenge will offer three distance options to accommodate runners of different fitness levels:
8 km run
16 km run
24 km run
The route is expected to feature a mix of trails and mountainous terrain, making it both a physically demanding and visually rewarding race.
Trail running events such as the Mountain Challenge have grown in popularity across the Eastern Cape, attracting athletes who prefer running in natural environments rather than on traditional road routes.
Online Entries Only
Organisers have confirmed that entries will only be accepted online through the ticket platform Entrytickets.net. Runners are encouraged to register early to secure their place in the event.
Participants who enter early may also receive a special incentive. A commemorative T-shirt will be awarded to the first 120 entrants, adding an extra incentive for runners to sign up as soon as possible.
Medals for Finishers
All runners who complete their chosen distance will receive a finisher’s medal, recognising their achievement in completing the demanding mountain course.
Trail races are often considered more technically challenging than road races due to uneven terrain, elevation changes and natural obstacles, making completion itself an achievement for many participants.
Club Kit Requirement
Organisers have also reminded athletes affiliated with running clubs that they must compete in their official club clothing during the race.
Failure to wear proper club kit could lead to disqualification, according to the race information provided by organisers.
This rule is standard practice in many officially recognised athletics events and helps ensure that runners are correctly identified as registered club members.
Growing Trail Running Interest
The Mountain Challenge is expected to attract runners from Komani, surrounding towns and other parts of the Eastern Cape. Events like this also contribute to promoting healthy lifestyles and outdoor recreation in the region.
Trail races also often draw spectators and supporters, helping create a festive atmosphere for participants and the community.
For further information or enquiries about the race, organisers can be contacted on 084 209 2639.
Residents interested in taking part are encouraged to register early, as trail events often fill up quickly due to limited capacity on routes.
