Suspected Stolen Vehicles Recovered Near Mthatha, One Arrested

The South African Police Service’s Tactical Response Team (TRT) deployed in the OR Tambo District has arrested a 41-year-old man from the Lucingweni locality in the Hluleka Administrative Area for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles.

The arrest took place near Mthatha on Thursday, 22 January 2026, at approximately 17:00, during routine operational duties by police members in the area.

Two Vehicles Found Parked Next to Road

According to police information, members noticed two vehicles parked next to the road, with a man standing nearby. The vehicles were identified as a Toyota Quantum and a Toyota Hilux bakkie, both models frequently targeted in vehicle-related crimes.

Police approached the man to establish the circumstances under which the vehicles were parked in the area.

Suspect Alleged Ownership of Vehicles

During questioning, the man claimed that he was the owner of both vehicles. He further alleged that one of the vehicles had developed a mechanical problem, which he said he was attending to at the time police arrived.

Given the situation and the information provided, police members proceeded to conduct a physical inspection of both vehicles.

Discrepancies Detected During Inspection

During the inspection, police detected discrepancies that raised suspicion regarding the vehicles’ legitimacy. As a result, both vehicles were circulated through the SAPS 10111 Call Centre for verification.

  • The Toyota Quantum had been reported stolen under a Libode CAS number, dating back to January 2021.

  • The Toyota Hilux bakkie was linked to a Khayelitsha CAS number, reported stolen in April 2022.

The cases were reported in separate policing jurisdictions, indicating that the vehicles were linked to different incidents.

Immediate Arrest and Vehicle Seizure

Following confirmation of the vehicles’ status, police immediately arrested the suspect for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles.

Both the Toyota Quantum and Toyota Hilux were seized by SAPS and will remain in police custody pending further investigation.

Court Appearance Expected

The suspect is expected to appear before the Ngqeleni Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 January 2026, where he will face charges related to the possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles.
