Ikhala TVET College is exploring ways to improve student support services and identify students who need assistance earlier following its participation in a study tour to Canada.
Ms Andiswa Mkumbuzi, a Career Guidance Officer at the college, participated in the SASTEP Inclusive Education Study Tour from 28 September to 7 October 2026.
Representing the college in a group focused on Gender Equity and Inclusive Education, Mkumbuzi visited Canadian institutions to learn about approaches to student wellbeing, academic support and early intervention.
“One of the most important lessons I brought back is that student support should not only respond when a student is already in crisis. It should also identify barriers early, connect students with appropriate assistance, and create an environment in which students feel safe, included, and able to succeed,” said Mkumbuzi.
The college is now considering how these approaches could be adapted to South African conditions in a practical, affordable and sustainable way.
Key areas include mental health support, academic assistance, student retention and creating a more inclusive learning environment.
No specific implementation plans or timelines have been announced.
