How is it that we have become used to almost non-existent service delivery? An entire town like Sterkstroom sits without water for days on end. This is a disaster in itself. There is no urgency from municipal officials, and each breakdown becomes another prolonged outage.
We sit on a Saturday evening in Komani, and out of the blue, the electricity just goes off. Everything we have planned for the evening comes to an end. We cannot do what was planned, and nothing is communicated by the municipality. This has gone on too long, and we have become used to it.
With just a few weeks to go until voting day, we have some serious questions we need to ask. Will our vote show that we accept these conditions, or will we vote for a change? This is what democracy is all about. Democracy is a system where, if the people in power don’t perform, we can vote them out. This is how we are supposed to hold them accountable. If the next elected officials do not perform, the same thing will happen to them.
I have nothing personally against any official in power in our town and area. I have never met or even seen most of them. I do have a problem with officials who are voted into power, underperform, and then get voted back into power.
Look at how our towns have deteriorated and ask yourself this question: Do I accept this, or do I want to see a change? If you want to see a change, make that change in the voting booth. And if you choose not to vote, then don’t complain.
