SAPS recovers stolen sheep during intelligence-driven operation on R58

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has once again demonstrated its ongoing commitment to combating stock theft following the successful recovery of stolen livestock during an integrated, intelligence-driven operation on the R58 between Lady Grey and Barkly East.

The operation was carried out after SAPS members received information regarding a vehicle suspected of transporting stolen livestock along the busy R58 route, a road often used to move stolen animals between rural areas and neighbouring towns.

Suspects abandon sheep while fleeing police

According to information provided by SAPS, officers responded swiftly after receiving the tip-off. While conducting patrols along the R58, members observed a vehicle matching the description provided.

Upon noticing the presence of the police, the driver allegedly stopped and offloaded two male suspects together with four sheep next to the road before fleeing the scene.

The vehicle then sped off in the direction of Sterkspruit. SAPS members immediately launched a search operation in the surrounding area, while also attempting to trace the fleeing vehicle.

A short while later, the vehicle was found abandoned next to the road. The driver was not located at the time of reporting, and investigations are continuing to trace and arrest all suspects involved.

Three live sheep recovered, one already slaughtered

The two suspects, aged 31 and 36, were found next to the road where they had allegedly been dropped off. Upon inspection, SAPS members recovered three live sheep and one sheep that had already been slaughtered.

The recovered livestock is believed to have been stolen earlier, although the exact location and time of the theft are still under investigation.

The live sheep were secured by SAPS, while further processes are expected to be followed to identify and return the animals to their rightful owner.

The two suspects were arrested on charges related to stock theft, a serious offence in rural communities where livestock often represents a family’s primary source of income.

Court appearance scheduled

The suspects are expected to appear before the Lady Grey Magistrate’s Court on 05 February 2026, where they will face charges related to the alleged theft and possession of stolen livestock.

SAPS confirmed that investigations remain ongoing, particularly to trace the driver of the vehicle and establish whether the suspects are linked to other stock theft incidents in the area.

Stock theft remains a major concern

Stock theft continues to pose a significant challenge across many parts of the Eastern Cape, especially in rural and farming communities.

Incidents of livestock theft not only result in financial losses for farmers and residents but also threaten food security and livelihoods.

SAPS has repeatedly emphasised the importance of community cooperation in combating stock theft, urging residents to report suspicious activity, unfamiliar vehicles, or movements of livestock, especially during odd hours.

The successful recovery in this case highlights the value of intelligence-driven policing and rapid response, particularly when information is shared timeously with law enforcement authorities.

Police have encouraged members of the public to continue working closely with SAPS by reporting any information that may assist in preventing or solving stock theft cases.
