Deadly tavern stabbing shocks Whittlesea community, suspect arrested

Whittlesea, Eastern Cape — A 35-year-old man has been arrested following a fatal stabbing at a tavern in the Upper Lahlangubo locality near Whittlesea, police confirmed.

The arrest was made on Sunday, 5 April 2026, by members of the Whittlesea South African Police Service (SAPS), after an incident that has left the local community shaken.

Incident unfolded inside tavern

According to information released by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in the Eastern Cape, the deceased was socialising with friends at a tavern when the suspect allegedly entered the premises armed with a knife.

Police say the suspect reportedly approached the victim directly and stabbed him. It is further alleged that the suspect then chased other patrons inside the tavern while still holding the knife.

The injured victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment but was declared dead on arrival.

Suspect in custody, court appearance expected

The suspect was later arrested by police and is currently being detained at Whittlesea Police Station.

He is expected to appear before the Whittlesea Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 April 2026, on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Police condemn incident

The District Commissioner, Major General Rudolph Adolph, condemns this senseless killing which is indicative of lack of humanity.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, and no further details about the motive have been confirmed at this stage.
