Another Blow to Komani: Widespread Power Outage Leaves Thousands in the Dark

Komani residents have once again been plunged into darkness, this time after a burnt faulty link at the Cold Stream substation in Ezibeleni forced the shutdown of the main supply line. The outage has affected vast parts of the town, including Ezibeleni, Queendustria, Komani Hospital, Laurie Dashwood Park, Queensview Park, Sabatha, Komani Park, Sandringham, the Army Base, and New Rest.

The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) confirmed the incident late on Sunday, stating that its technical team had been dispatched to attend to the fault. But for many residents, the announcement feels all too familiar.

Electricity disruptions in Komani have become a recurring nightmare, crippling businesses, jeopardizing healthcare facilities like Komani Hospital, and leaving households to cope with uncertainty. With each new breakdown, confidence in the municipality’s ability to provide consistent basic services continues to erode.

Critics argue that the crisis is not simply about technical faults but points to years of neglect, poor maintenance, and lack of forward planning within the municipality. The Cold Stream substation, a vital node in Komani’s electricity grid, has long been seen as vulnerable, yet no meaningful upgrades have been implemented.

For businesses in Queendustria and residents in working-class neighborhoods like Ezibeleni, the outage means yet another day lost to productivity and safety concerns. Meanwhile, the Army Base and other critical institutions are forced to rely on costly backup power — an unsustainable solution in the long term.

The EMLM’s brief statement provides no timeframe for restoration, leaving residents in limbo. Until transparency and accountability become central to municipal operations, Komani is likely to remain trapped in this cycle of service delivery failure.

For a community already burdened by potholes, water supply issues, and collapsing infrastructure, the blackout is more than an inconvenience — it is a stark reminder of a municipality in crisis.
