Suspects in Zolani Tete Murder Case Appear in Court

Suspects arrested in connection with the murder of well-known boxer Zolani Tete are set to make their first court appearances following a series of arrests over the weekend.

The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape confirmed that a 22-year-old suspect, arrested on Saturday, 22 August 2026, is appearing before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, 24 August.

He has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder.

The attempted murder charge relates to a 27-year-old woman who was wounded in the same shooting in which Tete was killed at NU 17, Mdantsane, on Friday, 21 August. She remains in hospital.

Two suspects arrested in Scenery Park on Sunday, 23 August, are also expected to appear before the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Police said all three suspects arrested on Sunday, aged 27, 27 and 28, are expected to appear in the main murder case before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 25 August.

This means four suspects are currently in custody in connection with the investigation.

A 30-year-old man who was initially apprehended on Saturday has since been released and remains a potential witness.

SAPS has cautioned the public and media against speculation or sharing unverified information, saying this could compromise the investigation and court proceedings.

Further updates are expected as the matter moves through the courts.
