Suspect to face court after alleged Ngcobo police shooting

A 62-year-old man is expected to appear in the Ngcobo Magistrate’s Court today, 24 August 2026, following an alleged shooting involving police officers during an operation in the Ngcobo area.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspect faces allegations related to an attack on police, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He was arrested during a joint operation involving Mthatha Public Order Police and Provincial Crime Intelligence at about 22:15 on Friday, 21 August, at Kuntsimbini Locality in the Qulunqu Administration area.

Police said the intelligence-driven operation was launched in response to a high rate of stock theft in the area.

According to SAPS, officers arrived at the targeted house and allegedly identified themselves before requesting permission to enter.

The suspect then allegedly opened fire from inside the house before opening a burglar door and firing at police officers.

One police officer narrowly escaped injury after a bullet struck near the shoulder area. SAPS said the officer’s ballistic vest prevented the round from causing injury.

Police subsequently searched the house and recovered a 9mm firearm with its serial number intact, 12 rounds of ammunition, a 9mm cartridge, a black holster and a projectile.

The 62-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene.

He is expected to appear in the Ngcobo Magistrate’s Court today as the case proceeds.
