N2 Blocked Near Dutywa as Protesters Burn Tyres
Traffic on the N2 near Dutywa in the Eastern Cape was severely disrupted on Monday after protesters blocked the national route with burning tyres and rubble, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Authorities have confirmed that residents are behind the protest action, although the reasons for the demonstrations remain unclear at this stage.
According to Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the road was blocked by protesters who placed burning tyres and debris across the route, preventing the normal flow of traffic.
Binqose said law enforcement agencies were dispatched to the scene to monitor the situation and work towards restoring access to the road.
“We don’t know whether it’s due to service delivery or other things,” Binqose said.
He urged motorists to avoid the affected section of the N2 and make use of alternative routes where possible.
“The most important thing is that we advise road users, motorists in particular, to avoid that stretch of the road and use alternative roads as directed by our law enforcement officers who are on the ground,” he said.
Police have also been called in to help manage the situation and prevent further disruptions.
“As things stand, that road is blockaded,” Binqose added.
Meanwhile, the local municipality has issued a traffic alert warning residents and motorists not to attempt to force their way through the affected area, saying this could escalate tensions and compromise safety.
Law enforcement and disaster management officials remain on site, monitoring developments and managing traffic around the protest.
No injuries, arrests or damage to vehicles had been reported at the time of publication.
Motorists travelling between East London and Mthatha are advised to check for updates before travelling and follow instructions from officials on the ground.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
