Stillwell Street businesses raise alarm over alleged drug activity

Business owners operating along Stillwell Street in Komani say they are increasingly concerned about safety and alleged criminal activity in the area, claiming the situation is negatively affecting both customers and nearby businesses.

Several shop owners contacted Komani News this week alleging that parts of the street have become associated with suspected drug-related activity and anti-social behaviour.

According to the complaints received, some business owners claim they have witnessed people allegedly buying and using drugs in the area, including near containers operating along the pavement.

Business owners further claim that the situation has created growing fear among some traders and customers who use the street daily.

“We live in fear as addicts will steal anything for a fix,” one business owner told Komani News.

Some shop owners also allege that theft in the area has become an ongoing concern, with stolen items allegedly being offered for sale locally.

According to business owners, police operations and arrests have allegedly taken place in the area previously, but they claim the problems continue.

The concerns have sparked calls from some business owners for stronger law enforcement visibility and intervention in the area.

Stillwell Street is a busy commercial area used daily by motorists, pedestrians, shoppers and businesses. Some shop owners now fear the ongoing concerns could damage trade and discourage customers from stopping in the area.

Komani News sent questions to South African Police Service regarding the allegations raised by business owners, including claims of alleged drug-related activity and previous police operations in the area. No response had been received at the time of publication.
