Tylden Bridge Partially Submerged After Heavy Rains

Tylden – Eastern Cape: The bridge over the Swart Kei River near Tylden village is partially submerged after recent heavy rains, raising fresh safety concerns among residents who have long warned about debris building up beneath the structure.

Community members say water has risen on one side of the bridge, with logs, wood and vegetation reportedly blocking the normal flow of water underneath. Residents previously called for the debris to be cleared as a preventative measure, warning that heavy rainfall could lead to flooding.

The bridge serves as a key access route for local farmers, workers and emergency services. Residents fear that continued rainfall could worsen the situation and potentially cut off access if the water level rises further.

Department of Transport Responds

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirmed that teams are assessing affected infrastructure across the province, including in the Chris Hani District.

Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said officials are working to assess damage to bridges and infrastructure in affected areas.

“We are working around the clock to assess the extent of damage to bridges and infrastructure across the province, including the Chris Hani District. Regarding the Tylden Bridge, our immediate priority is to remove debris so that water can flow underneath, as soon as the weather allows. We are also ensuring that the approaches connecting the bridge to the road are repaired,” he said.

Binqose added that safety remains a priority, particularly with low-lying bridges that become submerged during floods.

“We continue to run educational campaigns to remind people of the dangers of crossing low-lying or submerged bridges, as there have been tragic cases of people attempting to cross and losing their lives. We urge residents to heed these warnings and not take unnecessary risks,” he said.

Safety Warning to Residents

Authorities are urging motorists and pedestrians not to attempt crossing the bridge while water levels remain high. Flooded or partially submerged bridges can be dangerous, as water depth and current strength are often difficult to judge.

The situation remains under assessment, and further updates are expected as weather conditions improve and debris removal operations begin.

Residents are encouraged to report any additional damage or safety concerns to the relevant authorities while avoiding unnecessary travel across affected crossings.
