Ezibeleni Water Supply Disrupted After Pump Failure on Christmas Day
Residents of Ezibeleni Township are experiencing ongoing water interruptions following a mechanical failure at a key municipal pump, the Chris Hani District Municipality confirmed on Wednesday.
According to a media statement issued on 25 December, the disruption is the result of a malfunctioning water pump serving the Ezibeleni area. Municipal technical teams have since inspected the infrastructure and identified faulty bearings as the cause of the breakdown, which has affected normal water supply to households.
The municipality said urgent steps are being taken to restore services. A specialised service provider has been sourced and is expected to carry out repairs as soon as possible in order to stabilise the system and resume consistent water supply to the affected areas.
Emergency Water Relief Rolled Out
As an immediate intervention to reduce the impact on residents, five water carts have been deployed to supply potable water to affected communities. These water carts are intended to provide short-term relief while repair work is underway.
The municipality indicated that a formal water distribution schedule will be developed in collaboration with local ward councillors. This schedule is expected to ensure that water deliveries are coordinated fairly and reach the most affected sections of Ezibeleni during the outage period.
Residents have been encouraged to cooperate with councillors and municipal teams on the ground to facilitate smooth water distribution and avoid unnecessary delays or confusion.
Community Updates Promised
Chris Hani District Municipality has committed to keeping the community informed as repairs progress. Further updates will be communicated once technical teams have a clearer indication of repair timelines and when full water supply is expected to be restored.
Municipal officials acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the interruption, particularly during the festive season, and said restoring water services remains a priority.
Customer Care Support Available
Residents experiencing water and sanitation-related issues are urged to report problems through the municipality’s customer care centre. The toll-free customer care line, 0800 100 100, operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The municipality said reporting issues promptly assists technical teams in responding faster and improving overall service delivery.
Ezibeleni Township falls under the jurisdiction of the Chris Hani District Municipality, which is responsible for bulk water services in Komani and surrounding areas. Water interruptions linked to ageing infrastructure and mechanical failures remain a challenge across parts of the district, particularly during periods of high demand.
Municipal authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining essential services and ensuring residents have access to safe water while long-term infrastructure maintenance continues.
