Serious Crime Concerns Emerge as SAPS Starts Festive Crackdown
SAPS Warns of Rising Crime Risks as Festive Season Operations Begin in Chris Hani District
Komani, Eastern Cape – As Safer Festive Season operations officially get underway across the Chris Hani District, SAPS leadership has issued several new warnings and priority concerns for December — highlighting faction fights, taxi tensions and crimes targeting elderly residents as key threats heading into the holiday period.
This update follows the operational launch held earlier this week and forms part of SAPS’ district-wide festive readiness programme.
Faction Fights Now Linked to School Violence
District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph raised serious concern over ongoing faction-related conflicts, saying they have increasingly spilled from villages into schools and contributed to murder statistics this year.
Parents were urged to monitor young people closely during the initiation season and report any signs of brewing conflict.
Taxi Industry Instability Forces Rapid SAPS Deployment
The District Commissioner confirmed that Public Order Police (POP) had been deployed to Ngcobo to monitor tensions linked to taxi operations — a reminder that the transport sector remains volatile and capable of rapidly escalating.
He emphasised that such instability threatens regional safety during a time of heavy travel and high public movement.
Elderly Residents Targeted — SAPS Issues Strong Warning
SAPS condemned recent incidents involving elderly people living alone being attacked or killed in their homes.
Residents were urged to check on vulnerable neighbours, strengthen household security and report suspicious movement around homes where elderly people reside.
Fraudulent Sick Notes Under Investigation
A separate concern highlighted by the District Commissioner was the rise in fraudulent medical certificates, which have fuelled absenteeism across essential services. SAPS confirmed that any implicated medical practitioners will face legal consequences.
15 New Police Vehicles Deployed in District
To boost visibility and rapid response over the festive period, provincial leadership has delivered 15 new police vehicles to the Chris Hani District.
These units will support roadblocks, hotspot patrols, provincial operations and rural deployment.
Joint Law-Enforcement Commitment Continues
The Commissioner reaffirmed that SAPS, traffic authorities, correctional services, CPF structures and community partners remain in full collaboration to curb crime during the holiday period.
With the operational launch complete, SAPS says the focus now shifts to:
high-visibility policing
rapid response to threats
community cooperation
prevention of GBVF and violent crimes
stability on district roads and transport routes
