Chris Hani District Bolsters Fire Readiness with New Equipment
Komani / 15 October 2025 — The Acting Executive Mayor of the Chris Hani District Municipality, Cllr Malibongwe Fatyela, has officially received a consignment of veld fire-fighting equipment from the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Hon. Zolile Williams.
The handover, which took place earlier this week, forms part of the provincial government’s ongoing support to municipalities aimed at strengthening fire prevention and improving response capabilities across the Eastern Cape.
The new equipment includes skid unit fire pumps, drip torches, slashers, fire beaters, spades, and chainsaws — essential tools for combating the recurring threat of veld fires that endanger lives, livestock, and property in rural communities.
Speaking during the handover, MEC Williams emphasized the importance of equipping municipalities with the necessary resources to respond swiftly and effectively to fire outbreaks. He highlighted that proactive measures and proper training can drastically reduce the devastation caused by uncontrolled veld fires.
Cllr Fatyela expressed appreciation on behalf of the Chris Hani District Municipality, noting that the equipment will significantly boost local disaster management teams’ readiness ahead of the summer fire season. “This support will go a long way in protecting our communities and ensuring that our response teams can act quickly to prevent loss and damage,” he said.
The municipality is expected to distribute the equipment to priority local municipalities and community fire protection associations within the district to enhance coordinated efforts in managing veld fires.
This initiative aligns with the Eastern Cape government’s broader disaster management strategy — aimed at promoting preparedness, resilience, and collaboration between local, district, and provincial authorities.
