Car Crashes into Komani Cemetery, Damaging Tombstones
Komani — Residents woke up this morning to a surprising and somber scene at the Komani Town Cemetery, where a vehicle reportedly crashed through the boundary last night, damaging two tombstones in the process.
According to the Cemetery Supervisor, the incident likely occurred during the late hours, with the vehicle apparently coming from the Hangklip High School direction before losing control near the bottom corner of the cemetery. The impact caused visible damage to two gravestones, leaving debris scattered inside the premises.
“We discovered the damage this morning,” the Supervisor said. “It seems the driver lost control and went straight through the edge of the cemetery fence. Two tombstones were broken in the process.”
Call for information
At this stage, the driver’s identity remains unknown. The Cemetery management is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle involved to come forward.
“If anyone knows who crashed there, please contact us,” the Supervisor added. “A claim needs to be lodged to repair the two tombstones that were damaged.”
Concern over reckless driving
Local residents have expressed concern over the recurring issue of speeding and late-night reckless driving along that stretch of road near Hangklip High School and the cemetery. Many are calling for better signage or barriers to prevent vehicles from veering off into the cemetery grounds again.
One resident who lives nearby said, “It’s not the first time we’ve heard cars racing down that road. Something needs to be done before a serious tragedy occurs.”
Authorities notified
The matter has reportedly been brought to the attention of local authorities for investigation and possible follow-up with insurance claims or municipal repair work.
Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Komani Cemetery Office or the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality.
