Breaking: Three Cable Thieves Caught in Komani
Komani, Eastern Cape — Three individuals suspected of stealing electrical cables were apprehended in Komani this afternoon in an operation coordinated between the Tactical Response security company and local law enforcement.
The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) confirmed that the suspects have been remanded in police custody pending further investigation. The swift action highlights the ongoing efforts to tackle theft and vandalism of municipal infrastructure, which has been a persistent challenge for the municipality.
Mayor Papiyana Highlights Seriousness of Cable Theft
The Executive Mayor, Cllr Madoda Papiyana, emphasised that the arrests are an important step but cautioned that there are likely larger criminal networks behind these crimes.
“I am happy that these two have been nabbed but I know that there are kingpins behind them. We want to catch those who send these boys to damage our infrastructure. Since I took over as the Mayor of this Municipality we have been facing a challenge of theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure. Millions planned for normal maintenance are used for purchasing stolen and damaged infrastructure. We want all those involved to be brought to book. Weekly, we battle power outages as a result of these syndicates. Now we know who steals and who buys the copper cables locally,” Mayor Papiyana said.
He also reiterated the municipality’s commitment to protecting essential services and ensuring a reliable electricity supply for residents and businesses.
Impact on the Community and Infrastructure
Theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure not only cause frequent power outages but also place a financial burden on the municipality. According to EMLM officials, resources that should be allocated to improving and maintaining infrastructure are instead redirected to replace stolen components. This impacts service delivery and can result in delays for essential maintenance and upgrades, affecting households and commercial users alike.
Infrastructure theft has been a recurring issue across South Africa, with syndicates often targeting copper cables due to their resale value. Municipalities nationwide face similar challenges, highlighting the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement.
Community Role and Reporting Mechanisms
EMLM has called on residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity related to infrastructure theft or vandalism. Community members are encouraged to:
-
Contact local police immediately if theft or suspicious activity is observed
-
Report incidents to EMLM through official communication channels
-
Stay vigilant near substations, municipal installations, and other critical infrastructure
Mayor Papiyana stressed that the community’s support is crucial in safeguarding public assets and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery.
Next Steps
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working to identify other individuals or networks involved in cable theft and resale. The municipality has pledged to continue monitoring infrastructure closely, employing both security partnerships and public reporting to prevent future thefts.
The arrests mark a significant step in combating crime targeting municipal assets, but officials caution that vigilance and cooperation remain essential to protecting Komani’s electricity infrastructure and community wellbeing.
