Enoch Mgijima hosts “Bring A Smile” outreach in Whittlesea
KOMANI – Residents in Whittlesea received a boost to health and hygiene awareness this week as the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality partnered with Operation Smile South Africa for a community outreach programme focused on improving wellbeing in underprivileged areas.
The “Bring A Smile” outreach, held at the Whittlesea Multi-purpose Hall, brought together multiple stakeholders including the Department of Education, Department of Health and Igwiba Lesizwe.
Focus on health, dignity and prevention
According to the municipality, the initiative aims to improve health and dignity through practical support and education. The programme included oral health awareness, distribution of essential hygiene products, and support for individuals affected by cleft conditions.
Children were a key focus of the outreach, with free dental screenings conducted on-site. Organisers also distributed dental care kits, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, while sanitary pads were provided as part of broader hygiene support efforts.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort to promote preventative healthcare and reduce long-term health challenges in underserved communities.
Community engagement and education
Beyond the distribution of supplies, the outreach placed strong emphasis on education and engagement. Interactive activities were used to teach children about proper hygiene habits in a way that is accessible and engaging.
Cleft care awareness was also highlighted, helping to inform families about available support and treatment pathways for affected individuals.
Programmes like this aim to bridge gaps in access to healthcare information and services, particularly in areas where residents may face barriers to regular medical care.
Multi-stakeholder collaboration
The involvement of various government departments and organisations reflects a collaborative approach to addressing community health challenges. By combining resources and expertise, stakeholders aim to create more sustainable and impactful interventions.
Such partnerships are increasingly seen as essential in tackling systemic issues, particularly in rural and under-resourced areas across the Eastern Cape.
Building healthier futures
The municipality said the outreach is part of ongoing efforts to support healthier communities and improve quality of life through targeted initiatives.
By focusing on prevention, education and access to basic resources, programmes like “Bring A Smile” seek to lay the foundation for long-term improvements in public health.
