Griffiths Street closure in Komani to last until December

KOMANI – Motorists in Komani are being advised to prepare for long-term traffic disruptions following the planned phased closure of a key section of Griffiths Street, set to begin on 27 April 2026.

The notice, issued by Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, confirms that the closure will affect Griffiths Street between Cathcart Road and Warner Street, with construction expected to continue until 10 December 2026.

Phased closure to manage construction

According to the official notice, the roadworks will be carried out in two phases, with only one side of the dual carriageway closed at a time.

During Phase 1, the section on the McDonald’s side will be closed. Access to the restaurant will remain open, but traffic will be diverted to the opposite side of the road, near the Engen garage, where temporary two-way traffic flow will be created.

Once Phase 1 is completed, Phase 2 will introduce additional closures at key intersections, including:

  • Alan Greaves Road and Griffiths Street
  • Owen Street and Griffiths Street

The municipality states that traffic will continue to be managed using temporary lane adjustments, allowing vehicles to move in both directions on the open side of the road.

Traffic flow changes and access

Motorists approaching the area can expect changes in traffic direction, particularly around the McDonald’s vicinity. The notice outlines that traffic will be redirected from multiple approaches, including:

  • Cathcart town direction towards Griffiths Street
  • Komani Street towards Cathcart Road
  • Grey Street towards Cathcart Road
  • Alan Greaves Road and Owen Street (during Phase 2)

Despite the disruptions, limited access will be maintained for affected residents and businesses throughout the construction period.

Alternative routes advised

To ease congestion, motorists are urged to make use of alternative routes, including:

  • Cathcart Road
  • Wodehouse Street
  • Komani Street
  • Victoria Road

These routes are expected to carry increased traffic volumes as the project progresses.

Long-term impact

The closure is expected to last more than seven months, making it one of the more significant traffic interventions in the town this year. While the municipality has not detailed the full scope of the construction work in the notice, the duration suggests major upgrades or infrastructure improvements along this busy route.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and exercise caution when travelling through or near the construction zone.

Further updates are expected as the project progresses.
