ANC Slams AfriForum Campaign, Calls It Politically Motivated
The African National Congress (ANC) has issued a strongly worded statement rejecting claims made by AfriForum, describing them as politically motivated and reaffirming its position on South Africa’s sovereignty and governance.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the governing party criticised what it referred to as the “Mbalula Dossier” reportedly circulated by AfriForum, stating that it does not represent a legitimate pursuit of justice but rather a targeted political effort.
ANC pushes back against allegations
The ANC said it views the document as part of a broader campaign aimed at discrediting its leadership, particularly Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula. The party described AfriForum as a “reactionary organisation” and accused it of attempting to influence both domestic and international opinion against South Africa’s government.
According to the statement, the ANC believes AfriForum’s actions form part of a pattern of engagement with foreign actors, which it says undermines national sovereignty.
Claims of foreign influence rejected
The party further criticised what it described as calls for foreign intervention, including alleged appeals to the United States to take punitive action against South African political leaders.
The ANC said such actions were “reckless” and constituted an affront to the country’s democratic institutions. It maintained that all matters relating to law enforcement and governance should be handled within South Africa’s constitutional framework.
Defence of political leadership
The statement reaffirmed the ANC’s confidence in its leadership, including Secretary-General Mbalula, and emphasised that it remains focused on its policy priorities, including economic transformation and improving living conditions.
It also referenced historical context, noting that past ANC leaders were previously labelled negatively during the apartheid era, drawing parallels to current criticism faced by the organisation.
Strong language against AfriForum
The ANC also criticised AfriForum’s historical positions, accusing it of opposing transformation policies and promoting narratives that it says do not reflect the realities of modern South Africa.
It further alleged that the organisation has contributed to what it described as divisive messaging on international platforms.
Political tensions continue
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the ANC and civil society groups such as AfriForum, particularly on issues related to governance, transformation, and international advocacy.
