Two Suspects Killed in Shootout on R61 Near Bridge Camp
Two alleged extortion suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with police on the R61 near Bridge Camp on Saturday afternoon.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in the Eastern Cape, the incident occurred at approximately 15:20 on 21 February 2026 at the main gate of Hafton Farm.
Police Acting on Information
Provincial police said officers were following up on information regarding alleged extortionists travelling in a grey Toyota Verso. The vehicle was reportedly implicated in a recent kidnapping case involving a Chinese national.
Members of the South African Police Service Tactical Response Team (TRT) tracked and located the vehicle. It was stopped next to Hafton Farm along the R61.
According to the official statement, a suspect seated at the back of the vehicle allegedly opened fire on TRT members during the stop.
Police said officers were compelled to return fire in order to protect themselves.
Two Suspects Fatally Wounded
Both suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire. Authorities confirmed that only one of the deceased has been identified at this stage. The second suspect is described as an unknown African male.
No injuries to police officers were reported in the statement.
IPID Investigation Underway
The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), which is mandated to investigate incidents involving police action, including cases where suspects are killed during operations.
IPID will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, particularly in relation to police conduct.
Provincial Commissioner Responds
In the statement, Major General Adolph expressed appreciation for the members involved in the operation, noting their response after allegedly coming under attack.
He stated that the incident should serve as a warning to criminals who attack law enforcement officers.
Police investigations into the alleged extortion activities and the reported kidnapping case are continuing.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the confirmed deceased suspect, pending formal processes and family notification. Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
