Chris Hani District Boxers Compete for 12 Spots in Provincial Best of the Best Tournament

Chris Hani District pugilists competed for the position to compete at the Best of the Best tournament which will be held in East London next month.

On Saturday, Cobras Boxing Club, Golden Star Boxing Club and Queenstown Boxing Club (QBBC) competed for 12 positions for the Chris Hani District in next month’s tourney.

QBBC manager Mabhuti Mapeyi said the tournament was organised by Mpucuko Sport Development led by form South African Flyweight champion Ncedo Cecani who is based in East London but comes from Whittlesea.

“The tournament is an annual tournament where pugilists from around the province show case their talents as they compete with other regions going all the way to the represent the province against another chosen province that year,” he said.

He said the tournament starts with each district choosing its boxers which will compete in the provinces Best of the Best tournament in East London.

“Here in Christ Hani, the boxers that will be selected will participate at the Best of the Best tourney on 21 March 2026,” he said.

He said Mpucuko Sport Development has always done the tournament’s taking boxers from the areas to other provinces.

“They give the boxers chances to represent their province nationally which is a great experience for some of the boxers. We select a team of 12 boxers, which will be representing the district,” he said.

He said this year they don’t know whether they will be going to Cape Town or Durban for the finals.

“This is a good initiative for boxing in the province.”

Mapeyi said the tournament was good and it was a success.

“We wanted to have 30 bouts, but managed to 26 play bouts. It was the first tournament for the Chris Hani district of and as the district leadership we are disappointed by the attendants,” he said.

He said boxing clubs in the district are in a crisis as the district is vast, and are struggling with boxing rings and transport.

“We urge clubs to try and transport themselves and not rely on the department of sport for transport all the time.”

Mapeyi said on 28 February 2026 they will be doing a recruitment drive boxing tournament and the tournament will be at the Queenstown Boys Boxing Club gym.
