Hawks Nail Komani Accountant in R400k Fraud Case
Hawks investigation leads to criminal summons
A 47-year-old accountant from Komani is set to appear in court after being summoned by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit for alleged fraud involving more than R400 000.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) confirmed that the summons was issued on Thursday, 6 November 2025, following months of investigation into financial irregularities reportedly linked to her accounting business.
Complaint filed by local construction company
The case began when a construction company director filed a complaint, claiming the accountant had been hired to handle his firm’s books, audits, and statutory payments to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) between June 2020 and April 2023.
Investigators allege that, during this period, the accused failed to carry out the contracted work and instead redirected client funds for her own benefit.
According to the Hawks, the accountant allegedly misused company money entrusted to her care rather than meeting her legal and financial obligations on behalf of her client.
Hawks uncover suspected financial misconduct
Authorities say evidence gathered during the investigation indicates that the accused may have breached her fiduciary duties by diverting funds meant for legitimate business purposes. The amount involved is estimated to exceed R400 000.
The Hawks noted that financial crimes such as this one have a damaging impact on small and medium enterprises, which depend on trusted accountants to ensure compliance and stability.
The accused is expected to appear before the Komani Magistrate’s Court soon, where she will face charges of fraud and theft.
Local business community reacts
The incident has prompted fresh calls for stronger oversight and accountability in the financial services sector within the area. Local business owners have expressed concern about professional misconduct and urged colleagues to verify credentials and request regular reports from accounting service providers.
The Hawks reiterated their commitment to tackling white-collar crime across the Eastern Cape, stressing that the misuse of client funds will not go unpunished.
