The only rugby team proudly representing Komani, Progress Rugby Football Club, took to the field at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London on Saturday, facing Fort Beaufort United in another spirited Border Bruten Tournament clash.

Progress started the match brightly, with Deon Olivier diving over early to put the Komani side ahead 5–0. However, missed conversions and handling errors prevented them from capitalizing on their early momentum.

Fort Beaufort United struck back soon after, with Mihlali Nombovu scoring a try that was successfully converted by Olivier Zono, leveling the score and setting the tone for a tense contest. Both sides fought hard to break the deadlock, but the first half ended with the scores locked after a series of missed opportunities and tight defensive play.

Second Half Struggles and Costly Errors

The second half saw Fort Beaufort United surge ahead with an early try, stretching their lead to 12–5. The match then turned scrappy, with both sides committing repeated unforced errors and struggling with discipline.

Progress battled bravely but were undone by sloppy ball handling and missed chances in key moments. Several questionable refereeing calls added to the tension, yet Progress could not fully convert their attacking efforts into points.

Despite a powerful running game from captain Thurshaan Hare, who repeatedly broke through defensive lines, Progress lacked the support and finishing touch to turn those moments into tries. Their determination was clear, but execution once again proved costly.

Fort Beaufort capitalized on the pressure, with Ayabonga Ngantweni crossing the line to make it 17–5. Ill-discipline continued to plague both teams, as Geraldo Flusk of Progress and Vuyo Mboto of Fort Beaufort were both shown yellow cards, reducing the teams to 14 men each.

Late Fightback and Lessons Learned

Progress refused to give up. Yafika Bovu managed to score a late try in the corner, closing the gap to 10–17, but another missed conversion sealed their fate.

The final whistle confirmed Fort Beaufort United’s victory, while Progress were left reflecting on what could have been. The Komani-based side has now recorded two narrow defeats and one draw in the Border Bruten campaign, still in search of their first tournament win.

After the game, captain Thurshaan Hare noted that the team remains optimistic, emphasizing that “it’s not how you start, but how you finish.” Progress will next face Buffs Rugby Club in East London, aiming to close the competition on a positive note.

Pride in Defeat

Despite the loss, Progress RFC displayed heart, character, and flashes of skill that impressed spectators. While leadership lapses and discipline issues may have contributed to their defeat, the Komani side continues to represent their town with pride and resilience.

They now return to the drawing board, determined to convert potential into results and prove that they belong among the region’s top rugby sides.
