Star Bread and CHDM Team Up to End Water Scarcity in Lesseyton
Water Woes Eased: Lesseyton Community Receives New Borehole System in Public-Private Partnership
Lesseyton – Residents of Lesseyton and surrounding areas within the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) have reason to celebrate as a vital new water source was officially handed over to the community this week.
The project, a shining example of public-private partnership, saw local business Star Bread join forces with the CHDM, and the national Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) Water Resource Development branch.
The initiative, run under the banner of #ServingOurCommunitiesBetter, focused on addressing the persistent water scarcity issues facing the rural village.
A New Flow of Life
The handover ceremony marked the completion of a significant water project, which included the installation of a new, fully functional borehole system. Furthermore, essential work was done to deepen an existing borehole to maximise its yield and reliability.
According to a CHDM statement, the new borehole is a powerhouse, capable of pumping an impressive 3,000 litres of water per hour.
This high capacity is set to serve the entire village of Lesseyton and the neighbouring areas, significantly improving access to potable water for hundreds of households.
Safety First: Rigorous Testing Ensured
A crucial element of the project was the rigorous testing conducted on the water system. “The water system has undergone rigorous testing to ensure it’s chemical-free and safe for drinking,” confirmed a spokesperson for the DWS.
This due diligence guarantees that the community receives not just water, but clean, safe water that meets South African health standards.
Distribution of Essential Supplies
In addition to the infrastructure development, the partners provided practical relief to those most in need.
During the handover, 200 wheelbarrow water containers were distributed to community members, which will make the arduous task of transporting water from the borehole back home significantly easier and safer.
The CHDM has hailed the collaboration as a blueprint for future development projects. “This partnership with Star Bread shows what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together to serve our communities better,” commented a CHDM official at the ceremony. “Water is life, and this project brings a new sense of dignity and health to Lesseyton.”
