Solar Panel Thieves Caught After Quick Longhill Mountain Operation
A swift and coordinated response by SAPS units and private security teams in Komani has led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of stolen solar panels valued at R10,000. The operation unfolded on Longhill Mountain on Tuesday afternoon after intelligence was received about a theft at the Herotel communications tower.
Theft at critical communications site
According to information received by law enforcement, the suspects had removed two solar panels from the Herotel tower site — a key telecommunications installation supplying connectivity to parts of Komani and surrounding rural areas.
Given the strategic importance of the tower and the value of the equipment stolen, officers and tactical units immediately mobilised, launching a well-coordinated plan to intercept the suspects before they could escape.
Silent stakeout and perfect timing
Security teams and SAPS members strategically positioned themselves along the mountain’s descent route, ensuring the suspects would not notice their presence. As the thieves made their way down the rugged terrain towards the tar road, they were swiftly detained and disarmed without incident.
The stolen solar panels were discovered hidden in nearby bushes, confirming the precision of the joint operation.
“This was excellent teamwork and communication between all parties involved,” said a source familiar with the operation. “They acted fast, stayed coordinated, and prevented further infrastructure damage or losses.”
Stolen equipment recovered
The suspects, both adult males, were immediately handed over to SAPS Komani for further investigation and processing. The recovered items include:
-
2 x Solar Panels
-
Estimated Value: R10,000.00
Authorities have confirmed that the panels will be returned to Herotel following completion of forensic processing.
Agencies working together
This successful operation highlights once again the power of collaboration between police intelligence, K9 units, and private tactical response teams in addressing local crime. Units involved included:
-
SAPS Komani Crime Intelligence (CI)
-
SAPS Komani K9 Unit
-
Red Guard Security Tactical Response
-
QRRU Armed Reaction
Their combined rapid response prevented the stolen property from being trafficked or sold, and ensured the suspects were taken into custody before leaving the scene.
Community reaction and local impact
The theft of infrastructure such as solar panels, copper cables, and batteries has become a growing concern across the Eastern Cape, particularly in areas where communications towers, farms, and schools rely on renewable energy systems.
Local residents and business owners have praised the operation, noting that quick, coordinated action like this helps deter future crimes and restores public confidence in law enforcement.
“We often hear of thefts like this, but it’s rare to see such an immediate and effective response,” said a Komani resident. “It shows what’s possible when police and security companies work together.”
Ongoing vigilance
Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activity near communications towers, solar farms, or other energy infrastructure. Even small thefts can lead to major disruptions in connectivity and service delivery.
