Protest Tensions Shut Down Key Roads in Mthatha
Residents and motorists in Mthatha are facing major disruptions as protests continue to affect several key routes in and around the town.
Among the roads still closed are Nelson Mandela Drive, which forms part of the N2, as well as sections of the R61 towards Libode. Protesters have reportedly erected barricades made of rocks and burning tyres, causing traffic to come to a standstill in affected areas.
Law Enforcement on High Alert
Law enforcement agencies have made progress in clearing some of the affected routes. Public Order Policing (POPS), together with other officers, remain deployed on the ground in an effort to stabilise and manage the situation.
Authorities have not yet confirmed how long the road closures are expected to continue, but efforts are ongoing to restore normal traffic flow and ensure public safety.
Community Grievances at the Centre
According to information released by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the protests stem from a range of community concerns.
Among the key issues raised are:
-
A lack of water supply in certain areas
-
Electricity-related grievances
-
Frustrations from victims of the June 2025 floods who allege neglect
Community members affected by the 2025 floods have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with what they describe as inadequate support and slow intervention following the disaster.
Businesses and Schools Affected
The ongoing disruptions have significantly impacted daily life in Mthatha. Several businesses have been unable to operate as usual, with workers struggling to report for duty due to blocked routes.
Government services have also been affected, while learners have been prevented from attending school as transport routes remain unsafe or inaccessible.
Motorists Urged to Avoid CBD
Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the Mthatha central business district (CBD) until further notice and to seek alternative routes where possible.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while law enforcement continues efforts to restore order and reopen major roads.
