NPA Engages Students in GBVF Awareness Drive at Fort Hare

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has taken part in a key awareness initiative aimed at addressing gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) among students in the Eastern Cape.

The Sexual Offences and Community Affairs (SOCA) Unit of the NPA in the Eastern Cape Division recently participated in the RESPECT Campaign held at the University of Fort Hare’s Alice Campus. The campaign forms part of a broader national effort to drive social behavioural change and strengthen the fight against GBVF across South Africa.

Focus on awareness and prevention

The RESPECT Campaign, led by Higher Health, is aligned with the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. It focuses on promoting awareness, education, and behavioural change, particularly within institutions of higher learning.

During the engagement, NPA officials served as panellists, addressing a range of issues affecting students. The session created a platform for open discussion, with students raising questions around GBVF, access to justice, and the role of institutions in protecting victims.

The NPA’s participation highlighted the importance of early intervention and education in tackling GBVF at its root causes, especially among young people in academic environments.

Strengthening partnerships

According to the NPA, the engagement reinforced the value of collaboration between stakeholders, including higher education institutions, government departments, and civil society.

The campaign was described as a success, with organisers emphasising the need for continued partnerships to effectively combat GBVF. Such initiatives are seen as critical in building safer communities and promoting accountability.

Ongoing support for victims

The NPA continues to play a central role in addressing GBVF through its SOCA Unit, which focuses on prosecuting sexual offences and supporting victims. This work is further supported by Thuthuzela Care Centres, which provide integrated services to survivors, including medical care, counselling, and assistance through the legal process.

Through these structures, the NPA aims to improve conviction rates, ensure victim-centred support, and strengthen the criminal justice response to GBVF.

A continuing national priority

Gender-based violence remains a significant concern in South Africa, with institutions increasingly working together to address the issue through awareness campaigns, policy implementation, and community engagement.

The Fort Hare campaign is one of many initiatives aimed at shifting attitudes, improving understanding, and encouraging reporting, particularly among young people who are seen as key to driving long-term social change.
