NGCOBO – Authorities in the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality have intensified road safety efforts ahead of the busy Easter travel period, with a coordinated multi-agency operation held in Ngcobo.

The joint road safety operation brought together several government departments in a unified effort to improve compliance on the roads and reduce the risk of accidents during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The Easter season is traditionally associated with increased traffic volumes across the Eastern Cape, as travellers move between provinces and rural areas. This often leads to heightened risks on major and secondary routes, making enforcement and awareness campaigns critical.

During the operation, officials focused on monitoring driver behaviour, promoting adherence to traffic laws, and reinforcing road safety messaging among motorists and public transport operators.

Mayor of Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality, Councillor Siyabulela Zangqa, highlighted the importance of collaboration between government stakeholders in tackling road safety challenges.

He emphasised that coordinated efforts and shared responsibility are key to strengthening safety measures and ensuring safer communities. The operation forms part of broader Easter road safety initiatives taking place across the province, where law enforcement visibility is being increased.

Zangqa also called on motorists to play their part by remaining vigilant, obeying traffic regulations, and exercising caution at all times. Authorities continue to stress that driver behaviour remains one of the most significant factors in road incidents.

The operation in Ngcobo reflects a wider provincial push to reduce fatalities and injuries on the roads, particularly during peak travel periods when risks are elevated.
