Komani March Underway as Claim Back Komani Leader Explains Demands

A march is currently underway in Komani, with protesters gathering at Freedom Square (the town hexagon) before moving through parts of the town to present demands to local authorities. Although there had been earlier discussion about a possible shutdown, organisers say this did not materialise, and the action has proceeded as a march.

In a video recorded at the town hexagon (Freedom Square) earlier today, Bonke Mfenqe, one of the leaders of the Claim Back Komani movement, explained to Komani News why the march is taking place and what issues protesters want addressed.

Demands directed at municipalities

According to Mfenqe, the march aims to submit demands to both the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality and the Chris Hani District Municipality.

He said protesters are concerned about the installation of electricity and water meters in households, which they believe undermines the authority and voice of residents. Mfenqe stated that, in their view, these measures have been introduced without adequate consultation and have contributed to growing dissatisfaction within the community.

Leadership concerns raised

In his address, Mfenqe also raised concerns about the conduct of leadership within the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality. He claimed that members of the community feel disrespected by municipal leadership and said this has played a role in the decision to mobilise residents.

He further indicated that protesters are calling for accountability from municipal leadership. These statements reflect the views expressed by those taking part in the march and have not been independently verified.

Planned shutdown does not occur

The protest action unfolding today has so far focused on marching and communicating grievances, rather than the closure of businesses or public institutions.

Police remain deployed in the town centre and are monitoring the situation as the march continues. At the time of publication, there were no confirmed reports of injuries or arrests.
