Intelligence Operation Nets Suspect with AK-47 and Drugs in Libode
Mthatha – Eastern Cape. An early-morning intelligence-driven operation has led to the arrest of a 34-year-old man in the OR Tambo District for possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and drugs. The successful operation forms part of intensified #SaferFestiveSeason efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the region.
Police Strike at Dawn
According to authorities, members of the Mthatha-based OR Tambo District Task Team conducted the operation at approximately 03:00 on Wednesday in Moyeni locality, Marubeni Administrative Area, Libode. Officers acted on intelligence regarding illegal firearm and drug activities in the area.
Upon searching the suspect, police discovered an unlicensed AK-47 assault rifle, ammunition, and a stash of narcotics. Among the confiscated items were dagga bompies, sachets of Tik, and an undisclosed amount of cash suspected to be the proceeds of drug dealing.
Charges and Court Appearance
The suspect, who was unable to provide a valid firearm licence, was immediately detained. He is expected to appear before the Libode Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 6 November 2025.
