DA Praises Firefighters and Volunteers After Devastating Kouga Fires

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed its gratitude to firefighters, volunteers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and residents who bravely battled recent fires that swept across the Kouga Municipality. The blazes destroyed an estimated 25 000 hectares of land, threatening homes, farms, and livelihoods.

Dr Vicky Knoetze, DA Kouga Constituency Leader, said the scale of the disaster demanded extraordinary efforts from all involved. “These fires were relentless and posed serious risks to both people and property. The courage and commitment shown by everyone involved was remarkable,” she said.

Mayor Bornman Leads From the Front

The DA praised Kouga Mayor Hattingh Bornman and his team for their leadership during the crisis. Mayor Bornman was actively on the ground throughout, coordinating firefighting efforts, communicating with residents, and ensuring resources were efficiently deployed.

“Mayor Bornman led from the front, literally on the ground and at the coal face every day,” Knoetze said. “He was tireless in his efforts to coordinate the response to the fires and communicate with residents.”

Joint Operations Committee Coordinates Efforts

To manage the crisis systematically, a Joint Operations Committee (JOC) was established. The JOC brought together local and external stakeholders to oversee the response using a “Whole-of-Society” approach.

This structure allowed for effective collaboration, rapid information sharing, and quick decision-making, ensuring that firefighting teams, volunteers, and municipal staff could work efficiently under high-pressure conditions.

Municipal Resources Deployed

Significant municipal resources were mobilised in support of firefighting operations. Suction tankers were channelled to supply water to firefighting units, while other municipal vehicles and equipment were deployed to affected areas.

The DA highlighted that this level of support was possible because the municipality’s fleet was 98% operational, enabling rapid response and logistical support throughout the crisis.

Mayor Bornman, alongside the Acting Municipal Manager, conducted aerial assessments of affected areas to evaluate the damage and provide direct guidance to the JOC. These assessments were critical for strategic planning and prioritising firefighting efforts.

Aerial and Technological Support

Three aerial firefighting aircraft were deployed during the operation. Collectively, these aircraft dropped approximately 1.26 million litres of water over 91 flight hours, providing vital support to ground crews battling the fires.

In addition, advanced technology such as drones played a key role in detecting potential flare-ups, monitoring active fire lines, and improving situational awareness. This integration of technology and manpower demonstrated a comprehensive approach to disaster management.

Community Volunteers Commended

The DA also thanked volunteers, NGOs, and residents for their selfless contributions. Many risked their own safety to assist firefighters and protect their communities. Their dedication, coupled with coordinated municipal efforts, significantly reduced the potential impact of the fires.

Dr Knoetze emphasised that the bravery and commitment of all involved will not be forgotten. “The DA is grateful to every firefighter, volunteer, and resident who contributed. Their service to the community during this crisis was extraordinary and will be remembered for years to come,” she said.
