Motorists in Komani and surrounding areas are feeling the pressure as several fuel stations have reportedly run dry, while others are placing strict limits on diesel purchases.

Residents say a number of filling stations in the area have no fuel available at all, while those that still have diesel are restricting customers to roughly 50 litres per vehicle. This has led to long queues and growing frustration among drivers, particularly those who rely on diesel for transport and business operations.

The shortages are believed to be linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which have raised concerns about global oil supply routes. One of the key areas affected is the Strait of Hormuz — a critical shipping lane through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and fuel supplies pass.

While there have been reports of disruptions and heightened security risks in the region.

Industry analysts have warned that instability in this region can have a ripple effect worldwide, including in South Africa, which relies heavily on imported refined fuel products.

Locally, the impact is already being felt, with businesses and transport operators expressing concern over limited diesel availability. Farmers and logistics companies in the Chris Hani District are particularly vulnerable, as diesel is essential for day-to-day operations.

Adding to the concern is the possibility of a fuel price increase in April. While official adjustments are determined monthly based on international oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate, early indications suggest that fuel prices could rise significantly if current global pressures persist.

At this stage, no official confirmation has been made regarding the extent of the shortage or how long it may last. Authorities and fuel suppliers have yet to release detailed statements addressing the situation in Komani.

Motorists are advised to avoid panic buying and to plan fuel usage carefully while monitoring updates from official sources.
