Nine people were injured in a serious head-on collision on the R61 between Komani and Tarkastad during the early hours of Friday morning.
The accident occurred at approximately 01:00 on 19 December, about 10 kilometres outside Komani on the R61, a key regional route connecting Komani to Tarkastad. According to available information, the collision involved two vehicles travelling in opposite directions when they collided head-on under night-time driving conditions.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash was reported. The injured occupants were stabilised and transported to nearby medical facilities for further treatment. At this stage, the exact extent of the injuries has not been officially confirmed, but all nine victims required medical attention.
Night-Time Driving Risks on Regional Roads
The R61 is a heavily used route, particularly during the festive season, with increased traffic volumes, long-distance travel, and late-night driving contributing to higher accident risks. Night-time driving presents additional dangers, including reduced visibility and driver fatigue.
With the December holiday period in full swing, motorists are urged to exercise heightened caution, especially when travelling at night or on long stretches such as the Komani–Tarkastad road.
