Chris Hani Residents Warned of Severe Thunderstorms: Komani Included

Komani, Eastern Cape – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms affecting much of the Eastern Cape, including the Chris Hani District. Residents are advised to exercise caution as storms are expected to bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail, and intense lightning.

The warning is valid for Thursday, 5 February 2026. A deep surface trough over the province, combined with upper-air disturbances, is causing these unpredictable and potentially dangerous weather conditions.

Areas affected in Chris Hani include:

• Komani (formerly Queenstown)

• Surrounding towns and settlements across the district

Potential impacts of the storms include:

• Localised damage to homes, vehicles, crops, and other property

• Flooding in low-lying areas

• Difficult and dangerous driving conditions

• Short-term disruptions to electricity and communication networks

• Risk to life due to extreme weather events

SAWS urges residents to stay indoors where possible, secure loose objects outside, avoid flooded roads, and keep updated with weather forecasts and emergency services.

“Severe thunderstorms will continue tomorrow as the cut-off low passes eastwards,” the SAWS statement read. “Residents in the Chris Hani region, especially in Komani, should remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions.”
