Qonce (KWT) Residents Warned: Emergency Care May Disappear
Qonce, Eastern Cape – Residents of Qonce may soon face a serious healthcare challenge as Grey Hospital struggles to maintain essential services, putting vulnerable patients, expectant mothers, and the elderly at immediate risk.
For many families, Grey Hospital is the only nearby facility providing urgent medical care.
If services are disrupted, patients could be forced to travel long distances or seek treatment at already overcrowded tertiary hospitals, potentially delaying care for serious conditions.
Concerns have been raised with the Eastern Cape Department of Health regarding the hospital’s operational status, funding shortfalls, staffing levels, and plans to ensure continuity of care.
Health authorities have been asked to provide clarity on measures being taken to stabilise services and protect patients.
Reports from staff indicate that the hospital faces chronic staff shortages and frequent shortages of essential medical and surgical supplies.
Food and laundry services have also been reported as unreliable, contributing to a decline in the overall standard of care.
Healthcare experts warn that if these challenges are not addressed, patients may increasingly bypass referral pathways and seek care at tertiary hospitals, adding pressure to already congested facilities.
The situation highlights broader challenges in the province’s healthcare system, including infrastructure maintenance, resource allocation, and staffing at district hospitals.
Local stakeholders are calling for urgent intervention to ensure that residents continue to have access to emergency and essential healthcare.
“Residents of Qonce rely on Grey Hospital for life-saving care. It is critical that the hospital receives the support it needs to continue operating effectively,” said Jane Cowley, MPL.
Authorities have been urged to provide detailed reporting on budgets, staffing levels, and service continuity to protect patients and support frontline healthcare workers.
