Eastern Cape, 5 January 2026 – The Eastern Cape Department of Transport, in collaboration with its Western Cape counterpart, recently conducted a highly successful integrated road safety operation along the busy R61 corridor.

The operation, led by Eastern Cape Transport MEC Hon. Xolile Nqatha alongside Western Cape Transport MEC Hon. Isaac Sileku, focused on public transport and road safety during peak travel times. The initiative targeted the critical period between 18:00 and 22:00, when thousands of holidaymakers were returning home following the December festive season.

“This joint effort demonstrates our commitment to keeping roads safe and ensuring compliance along one of the country’s most important transport routes,” MEC Nqatha said.

Operation included routine roadblocks, vehicle inspections

The operation included routine roadblocks, vehicle inspections, and checks on public transport operators to ensure adherence to road safety regulations. By targeting high-traffic periods, the two provincial governments aimed to reduce accidents and enhance traveller safety during the busy holiday season.

MEC Sileku praised the partnership, stating: “Collaboration between provinces is key to addressing the challenges of interprovincial travel. By working together, we can ensure safer journeys for all road users.”

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirmed that such operations would continue throughout the year to maintain road safety standards, particularly along heavily trafficked national and provincial routes.
