Lady Frere Gogo Burnt to Death in 2015, Family Still Wants Answers
Family Seeks Clarity on 2015 Machubeni Inquest Into Elderly Woman’s Death
Lady Frere, Machubeni, Eastern Cape – The family of 85-year-old Noxolo Mkhosi has renewed calls for clarity regarding a police inquest opened following her death in Machubeni in 2015, saying they would like a clearer understanding of how the matter was concluded.
Mkhosi died in August 2015 during an incident in which she was attacked and set alight following allegations of witchcraft within the community. The incident was widely reported at the time and caused shock among residents in the area.
According to reports published in 2015, Mkhosi was confronted at her home and later sustained fatal burn injuries. Her house was also damaged by fire during the incident. Emergency services were alerted, but she later succumbed to her injuries.
Case Reported to Police in 2015
The matter was reported to police at the time and investigated in accordance with procedures applicable to deaths requiring further examination.
In response to questions from Komani News, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the case was registered as an inquest.
SAPS further confirmed that the inquest docket was closed on 25 August 2015.
Police indicated that, because the matter was handled as an inquest, no suspect was recorded on the system. SAPS also stated that the reason for the closure would be contained in the physical docket.
Family Requests Explanation of Outcome
The Mkhosi family says that while they understand the matter was handled as an inquest, they were never provided with a clear explanation of the outcome or the basis on which the docket was closed.
They say their request is focused on understanding the process that was followed after the incident and whether any further steps are available to them.
Further Information Linked to Original Docket
SAPS advised that additional clarity could only be obtained by consulting the original case docket. Police also indicated that assistance would be sought from the relevant Branch Commander, who was on leave at the time the enquiry was made.
Komani News allowed additional time for this process; however, no further feedback had been received by the time of publication.
Understanding the Inquest Process
An inquest is a legal process used to determine the cause and circumstances of a death where criminal liability has not been established.
Inquest matters may be revisited if new information becomes available or if relevant authorities determine that further review is necessary.
At this stage, the family is seeking guidance on what options, if any, remain available to obtain further clarity regarding the 2015 inquest.
Awaiting Further Guidance
SAPS has indicated that further information may be available following consultation of the physical docket. No additional response had been received by the time of publication.
Komani News will continue to follow the matter should further information be provided by SAPS or other relevant authorities.
