Inquest Opened After Fatal Drowning at Year-End Function

Komani, Eastern Cape – December 11, 2025 – Police in Komani have confirmed the opening of an inquest docket following the tragic death of a 34-year-old man during a year-end function last week.

SAPS Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed today that the local branch has officially received the case details.

Incident Details

The incident occurred on Friday, December 5, 2025. The deceased was with colleagues at a local venue, celebrating a year-end function.

The tragedy unfolded after the man went swimming in the pool. It is alleged that after some time passed, his colleagues became worried when they realised he had been underwater for a prolonged period.

The colleagues quickly entered the pool, managing to rescue him and bringing him to safety.

He was immediately rushed to Komani Private Hospital for urgent medical assistance. Despite their efforts, he was tragically certified dead at approximately 17:40 that afternoon.

Police Action

Captain Mgolodela stated that an inquest docket has been opened to formally investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
