Fatal N6 Crash Near Stutterheim Claims Lives of Mother and Two Children

A devastating road crash on the N6 outside Stutterheim towards East London has claimed the lives of a mother and her two children today at about 15:30, leaving the local community in mourning and once again highlighting the deadly consequences of road accidents in the Eastern Cape.

Three Family Members Killed on the Scene

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport (EC DoT), the fatal crash involved a sedan and a fully loaded midi bus. Preliminary information indicates that the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was travelling with her two children, aged five and 15, when the collision occurred.

Tragically, all three occupants of the sedan died on the scene as a result of the impact.

Bus Passengers Injured

The midi bus, which was transporting workers home from a well-known local chicken meat processing company, was carrying approximately 20 passengers at the time of the crash. All sustained various injuries and were transported to Stutterheim Hospital for medical treatment.

Emergency services responded swiftly, stabilising the injured and securing the scene while traffic on the busy N6 route was affected for several hours.

Local Community Deeply Affected

It is understood that the deceased and many of the injured passengers are residents of Stutterheim. This has intensified the emotional impact of the tragedy, as those involved may be known to one another within the close-knit community.

Such incidents often leave long-lasting emotional and psychological scars, not only on families directly affected but also on first responders and community members.

MEC Conveys Condolences

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mr Xolile Nqatha, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and the wider Stutterheim community.

“We are deeply disturbed by this tragic loss of life, particularly that of young children. On behalf of the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, I extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of those who have lost their lives. Our thoughts are also with the injured, and we wish them a speedy and full recovery. This is a painful reminder of the devastating impact of road crashes on our communities.”

Investigation Underway

Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that a formal investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway. No further details have been released at this stage, and officials have urged the public to avoid speculation until investigations are concluded.
