EFF Steps In to Clear Blocked Drain, Restore Access Near Burgersdorp School
Residents in Ward 5 of Burgersdorp are seeing relief after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Walter Sisulu sub-region intervened to address a blocked stormwater drainage system that had been causing flooding near a local school.
According to information provided to Komani News, the drainage system had become severely blocked due to sewerage flowing through the area, leading to flooding in front of Maruping Primary School. The situation reportedly made it difficult for learners to safely access the school, raising concerns about both safety and hygiene.
Flooding and Health Risks Raised Concerns
Community members indicated that the blocked drainage system resulted in standing water mixed with sewage, posing potential health risks to pupils and residents. The flooded section also affected motorists using the road, creating hazardous conditions.
The issue highlights ongoing infrastructure and maintenance challenges in parts of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality, particularly relating to stormwater systems and sewerage management.
EFF Conducts Clean-Up Operation
In response, the EFF in the Walter Sisulu sub-region undertook a clean-up operation in the affected area. The team cleared the blocked sewer lines and swept the surrounding area to restore proper water flow.
Following the intervention, the road in front of the school has been cleared, making it accessible again for both learners and vehicles. The area is also reportedly free of the strong odours that had previously been a concern.
Calls for Sustainable Solutions
While the immediate problem has been addressed, the situation raises broader questions about ongoing maintenance of stormwater infrastructure and the need for long-term solutions to prevent similar incidents.
Residents often rely on timely municipal intervention to maintain safe and healthy environments, particularly around schools where children are directly affected.
Community Impact
The clean-up has brought short-term relief to learners and parents at Maruping Primary School, ensuring safer access to education facilities. However, consistent upkeep of drainage and sewer systems remains essential to prevent future disruptions.
