Early Morning Hijacking Ends in Arrest Near Dutywa Healthcare Centre

Four men aged between 25 and 37 have been arrested following the alleged hijacking of a Toyota Quantum in Southernwood, East London, in the early hours of the morning.

According to Mbhashe Local Municipality, the suspects were apprehended by Mbhashe Traffic Officers and Law Enforcement near the Dutywa Healthcare Centre after a brief pursuit.

Hijacking in Southernwood

The municipality said the Toyota Quantum was allegedly hijacked at gunpoint at around 5am near a bridge in Southernwood, East London.

The Commander of Safety and Security at Mbhashe Local Municipality, Mr Lubabalo Mbelani, confirmed that traffic officers and law enforcement officials were alerted by the vehicle’s owner shortly after the incident.

The vehicle was later spotted at traffic lights in Dutywa. When officers attempted to stop it, the driver allegedly sped off, triggering a chase.

Suspects Flee on Foot

Authorities said the suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot towards Govan Mbeki Township.

Mbhashe Traffic Officers and Law Enforcement members pursued the suspects and later apprehended them near the Dutywa Healthcare Centre.

A maroon Toyota Starlet, believed to have been escorting the hijacked Quantum, was also linked to the incident.

Firearm and Altered Registration Plates

Upon arrest, the four suspects were allegedly found in possession of a 9mm pistol. It is further alleged that the vehicle’s registration plates had already been changed.

Mr Mbelani stated that the suspects were reportedly heading to Umsinga in KwaZulu-Natal at the time of their arrest.

The four men are currently being held at Dutywa Police Station. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
