Boyfriend Arrested After Woman’s Body Found in Suitcase near Aliwal

Police have arrested a 34-year-old man within 24 hours after the body of a woman was discovered inside a suitcase in a pond near Aliwal North in a shocking case that has renewed concerns around gender-based violence in South Africa.

The South African Police Service confirmed that the suspect — believed to be the boyfriend of the deceased — is now in custody and expected to appear in the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.

Body discovered by children

According to police, the grim discovery was made on 15 March 2026 when a young boy and his friends came across a suitcase floating in a pond in the maizefield area near a dumping site outside Aliwal North.

After opening the suitcase, the children discovered the body of a woman inside and alerted authorities.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the woman was declared dead upon arrival.

Police have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending formal identification and the notification of family members.

Multidisciplinary investigation launched

Following the discovery, police launched an urgent investigation involving multiple specialised units.

A multidisciplinary team of detectives, the District Murder Task Team and the K9 biological dog unit was assembled to track down those responsible.

Within 24 hours of the discovery of the body, police arrested the 34-year-old suspect.
