Molteno Residents Raise Alarm Over Sewage Flowing Into Jubilee Dam
Residents in Molteno have raised concerns about wastewater flowing near a dam in the town, saying the smell has become unpleasant for people living in the surrounding area and calling for action to address the problem.
Wastewater can be seen flowing across the ground near the dam, while litter is visible along parts of the shoreline.
Some residents claimed the overflow could affect downstream water sources and expressed fears about possible environmental and health risks.
Chris Hani District Municipality spokesperson Soso Ngceke, however, disputed claims that the dam is connected to drinking water supplies.
Ngceke said Paradise Dam remains the primary source of potable water for Molteno, including the Airstrip area and surrounding communities.
“The catchment dam mainly collects rainwater and is not used for human consumption. Furthermore, it is not connected to any river stream,” she said.
According to the municipality, sewer blockages are often caused by foreign objects entering the sewer network through improper waste disposal practices and illegal dumping.
Ngceke said municipal technical teams conduct routine maintenance and are dispatched to clear blockages whenever reports of sewer overflows are received.
Residents living near the affected area have nevertheless called for a lasting solution, saying recurring wastewater spills and litter remain a concern.
