The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has begun removing illegally placed containers in parts of Komani following ongoing complaints about conditions in sections of the town’s central business area.

In a media release issued on Monday, the municipality confirmed that an operation had started in Stillwell and Joubert Streets, which it described as hotspots for illegal business operations.

The move comes days after concerns were raised publicly about conditions in the area, including allegations of nuisance activity, refuse accumulation, and suspected criminal activity near some container businesses.

According to the municipality, several containers had allegedly been placed without municipal approval and business owners had previously been instructed through meetings and official correspondence to vacate the sites.

“The Municipality has received numerous complaints from residents and businesses regarding nuisance and alleged illegal operations in the area,” the statement read.

Municipal officials said affected businesses had been advised to apply for designated sites intended for informal trading and related activities.

The municipality further alleged that some of the affected streets had become associated with ongoing refuse problems and environmental concerns. It said operations linked to some containers included hair salons, vehicle repairs and tyre repair businesses.

“Oil marks and burnt substances are visible along the streets, and the containers have encroached onto pavements, leaving insufficient space for safe pedestrian movement,” the municipality stated.

The municipality also confirmed that illegal electricity connections linked to some containers had previously been disconnected during operations conducted in 2025.

Officials said the current removal operation would continue over the coming days as part of efforts to restore order and improve conditions in the area.

“The Municipality remains committed to restoring order, protecting public spaces, and ensuring a safe and clean environment for all residents,” the statement added.

The development follows growing public discussion around conditions in parts of Komani’s CBD, particularly along Stillwell Street, where concerns have recently been raised by some businesses and residents.

The municipality’s statement did not indicate how many containers are expected to be removed during the operation or whether any fines or further enforcement action may follow.
